Sino-European Cooperation Agreement Signed

This Friday, the declaration of intent on future cooperation between China and Europe was signed by Rolf Appelkvist, head of school at the School of Business and Informatics at the University of Borås. “Along with five other seats of learning in China and Europe we have now reached an agreement on future cooperation within the framework of the Euro-Sino Network. Initially the agreement entails a development of a common programme framework and a new application for coordination of a larger number of exchange programmes,” says Rolf Appelkvist.

The University of Borås, Shandong Jiaotong University (China), the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (China), Universidad de Alcalá (Spain), INHolland University (the Netherlands) and INSEEC (France) will jointly develop a framework for bachelor education programmes where the combination of business and informatics are the central elements. The idea is to educate systems developers with a unique knowledge of marketing and leadership, or marketers with unique skills in systems development, combinations of skills that will prove sought after as globalization continues.

“The idea is that students in Europe are to study abroad for two to four terms, with a least one term spent in China, while the Chinese students are to visit a European seat of learning for a year. There will be no specific programme to study; the idea is that the students choose their own programme based on each university’s special competence. That makes every exchange unique,” says Rolf Appelkvist.

Tom Kentson, a project manager at INHolland University clarifies:
“We are talking about a unique and flexible framework where each seat of learning contributes with their specialty, which makes all parts unique. The students are given the opportunity to construct their education themselves, getting a customized and exclusive education.”

Rolf Appelkvist also points out that it is not only a matter of students, that teachers and other staff members are also to be given the opportunity to go to other seats of learning to create networks and cooperate.

An Increased Understanding in a Global World

The goal of the framework is to increase the understanding and employability of the students. In addition they will be getting a global knowledge that is very important in today’s society.
“In Spain the students are very interested in studying in China,” says Maria-Teresa del Val Nuñez, Director of International Relations at the Universidad de Alcalá, and thinks about the many connections between Spain and China in other areas, for example commercial interests.

In China too, the interest in studies abroad is great. Representatives of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology say that they already have two students studying at the University of Borås who are very pleased with their studies.

“We will work towards increasing the cooperation with a number of other Chinese universities,” Rolf Appelkvist points out. “It is quite possible that more universities and university colleges in Europe will join the framework for programmes.”
