Days of Knowledge 2016 – a day to celebrate knowledge


Days of Knowledge – a celebration of education and research at the University of Borås. A substantial programme took place 19 October. The Social Media Prize, panel debate on sustainable design, and numerous scholarships, research grants, and other prizes were the ingredients of a full day and evening.

The afternoon brought a lecture by Wikimedia Sverige, the year’s winner of Sparbanksstiftelsen Sjuhärad’s Social Media Prize. Anna Troberg, Director of Wikimedia Sverige, spoke about her organisation and its work.

Clemens Thornquist, professor at The Swedish School of Textiles, moderated the panel discussion on sustainable design in international perspective, in which Catarina Midby, Sustainability Manager at H&M and Mariko Takahashi, international guest designer at The Swedish School of Textiles, participated.

The afternoon concluded with the conferring of scholarships within sustainable dvelopment to students and staff at the University of Borås.

Sustainable Development certified courses

Five courses at the university that have the perspective of sustainable development integrated into their syllabi and assessments were certified:

  • Aesthetic Theory - Design Seminars I, 7.5 ECTS credits
  • Clinical Nursing: General Nursing, 25.5 ECTS credits
  • Organisational sustainability and management within care, 7.5 ECTS credits
  • IT Service Management, 7.5 ECTS credits
  • Preschool Educational Perspectives Children, Science and Technology, 30 ECTS credits

Good examples

A development project was awarded a scholarship of 60,000 Swedish crowns to further develop earlier certified courses and/or educational programmes in which the course is given:

  • Pilot project – the integration of introductory elements in sustainability development in a certified course (Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business)

Thesis Work

Two theses integrating sustainable development were awarded 25,000 Swedish crowns each:

The University of Borås, City of Borås, Sparbanksstiftelsen Sjuhärad, and Swedbank Sjuhärad stand for the event. The day is an offshoot from Sparbanksstiftelsen Sjuhärad's traditional gala in which they award prizes within sport, culture, and education in the region of Sjuhärad.

2.4 million Swedish crowns in research funding

During the evening’s festivities, Sparbanksstsiftelsen Sjuhärad awarded 2,357,650 Swedish crowns in research funding to seven projects at the University of Borås. A performance by Borås Studentkör and a presentation by Drivhuset’s pitch winner Tobias Svensson also took place.

This year’s Days of Knowledge is also a part of Globala Borås, a collaboration between City of Borås, Borås Energi och Miljö, Boras Waste Recovery, the University of Borås, and assistance authority Sida.
