Björn Brorström, Vice-Chancellor
Björn Brorström, born in 1953, is vice-chancellor at the University of Borås and professor of Business Administration. He took office in August 2011, leaving the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor at the university.
In 1982, Björn Brorström earned his PhD in Business Administration at the University of Gothenburg with a thesis on how decision-makers use accounting information to assess operations and finances. He was appointed associate professor in 1989. He became a professor at the School of Public Administration in Gothenburg in 1996. Together with colleagues he was responsible for establishing a new, comprehensive doctoral program in Public Administration. He became Head of the Department there in 2000 and served in that position until his appointment to the University of Borås in November of 2006.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Björn Brorström was director of Kommunforskning i Västsverige (Municipal Research in West Sweden). He was among the initiators of the development and establishment of the member-financed municipal research institute and was also the first head of the institute.
Björn Brorström has had several different external assignments in his field of research. He has been a member of expert groups for the development of municipal accounting, board member of the national professional association of municipal accountants and member and accreditor in the European Association for Public Administration Accreditation.
His work has been published in some 20 books along with numerous scientific articles, conference papers, reports, and opinion articles. Management, governance and economic assessments of public organisations compose the subject areas. An institutional perspective offers excellent interpretations and analyses, and he has also been published twice in the Journal of Economic Issues, which is highly significant in the field of critical institutionalism. His number of publications amounts to approximately 300. He has extensive experience in teaching and supervising undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. He has made innumerable presentations at conferences in the field of municipal finances and politics. He also launched and for several years edited a scholarly journal that is today titled the Scandinavian Journal of Public Administration.
Today, Björn Brorström has numerous local, regional and national assignments related to his position as Vice-Chancellor: member of The Association of Swedish Higher Education (SUHF); member of the National Library of Sweden’s national reference group; chairman of SUHF’s steering committee for the Forum for Library Directors; chairman of the Forum for Prehospital R&D in West Sweden; and chairman of Kommunforskning i Västsverige.
