The course covers the basics of the Swedish language, both its structure and function. The focus rests on the student's own linguistic progression and the course is largely centered on communicative exercises where students apply the knowledge from this course. Written and oral assignments are reported and assessed continuously. The course also provides some guidance in Swedish heritage and society.

The language of instruction is Swedish. However, instruction in English can occur.

Lectures, individual and group assignments. A large part of the Swedish studies shall be conducted independently outside of class time.
Classes are usually in Swedish, but teaching in English may occur.

Learning Outcomes

Having completed the course, the student is to:

  • recognise familiar words and very basic phrases concerning himself/herself and immediate concrete surroundings
  • understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences
  • interact in a simple way, ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics
  • use simple phrases and sentences to describe where he/she lives and people he/she knows
  • write short, simple messages eg emails, fill in personal details in simple forms

Student Influence and Evaluation

The course is evaluated orally during the course. In addition, an individual written evaluation is accomplished at the end of the course. The evaluation is presented in a course report that is published according to the rules of the Academy.
