Search Summon or search a database?

Summon lets you search many resources from one single search box. It is easy to navigate and refine search result sets using multiple methods like filtering, faceting and sorting. You can refine your searches to journal articles, books, theses and much more. A subject search in Summon often recommends one or more subject-specific databases that you can use to make more specific searches in the area of your subject.

There are cases when it could be better for you to search directly in a specific database. For instance, some databases have their own thesaurus with very specific subject terms, or other unique functions that could be valuable for you to use. And in the case where the database is not activated in Summon, you need to go directly to the database for your searches.

As default, Summon is searched from one search box, and then you can refine your search by the facets. There are also other search options like advanced search and boolean search.

Refine search with the facets

When you search Summon from the search box you can refine the result by using facets. There are facets for Content type, Subject terms, Publication date, Library location and Language. There is also a facet to refine your search by available full text, articles from scholarly journals, exclude newspaper articles and add results beyond your library´s collection.

Advanced search

Use advanced search to direct your searches to specific fields or to filter searches.

Boolean search

It is possible to use boolean operators to search Summon. The operators AND, OR, NOT can be used. The operators must be written in ALL CAPS. The operator AND is used between words as default. For truncation, use "*". For wildcards, use "?".
