Professor

Martin Hellström is a Professor of Literature.

Martin Hellström (formerly Todtenhaupt) was born in 1962 in Essen, Germany. He studied "Germanistik" and Catholic theology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, and obtained his doctorate in 1990. His dissertation’s title was Veritas amoris. Die ‘Tristan’ -Konzeption Gottfried von Strassburg.

He was a Foreign Lecturer at Umeå University (1991-1993), Lecturer in German at Mid-Sweden University (1993-1994) and subsequently Lecturer (1995), Associate Professor (2003), and then Professor (2011) in German literature at the University of Gothenburg. He was head of the subject of German at Mid-Sweden University (1993-1994), Head of the Department of German and Dutch (1997-2001, 2006-2007) and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts (2007-2011) at the University of Gothenburg. Since 2011, he has been Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Borås and since 2012 Professor of Literature.

He has experience in the teaching of German culture, literature, and literary history and has published within comparative literature with a focus on German literature. His focus has been on doctorate level studies within mediaeval literature of the 13th century and has more recently taught contemporary literature based on questions of narrative technique and intertextuality.

Together with Professor Edgar Platen, he founded the "Forum für deutsche und Deutschland Gegenwartsliteratur study" (DGD) at the University of Gothenburg (since 2003). He is editor of the publication series Zur Darstellung von Zeitgeschichte in deutschsprachiger Gegenwartsliteratur (Munich: iudicium). He has been a Jury Member for Borås Tidning’s literary prize since 2013.

Professor Hellström enjoys cycling. His longest cycle trip was about 3 500 kilometres from the North Cape to Essen, Germany. His favourite author is Felicitas Hoppe and Astrid Lindgren’s books have made him a lively reader with an interest in Sweden and Swedish literature.
