Health Insurance

All incoming students to the University of Borås are covered by a health insurance either through the university, Swedish social insurance or European social insurance. Even if you are not required to have a private health insurance there are some things that the social insurances or the university's insurances do not cover. Therefore it is recommended to check if you need to obtain an additional insurance yourself.

For more information on health care refer to Health care in  Sweden for foreign students.

For more information on dental care refer to Dental care in Sweden for foreign students.

Students from the EU/EEA or Switzerland

Students from the EU/EEA should register for a European Health Insurance Card from their Social Insurance office. It will grant you health care on the same terms as Swedish citizens, if the treatment becomes necessary during your stay in Sweden. It does not cover care which can be delayed until you return home, such as some types of dental treatment. Note that dental care is subsidized, but not free.

The European Health Insurance Car does not cover property or losses from burglary, robbery, and other theft. Students should get a private insurance (for example a travel insurance from your home country) to cover this.

Fee-paying students who are not SI scholarship holders

The University of Borås has signed a group insurance FAS+, “the Swedish State’s Insurance for Fee-Paying Students with property cover”, for fee-paying students as well as students with a tuition fee waiver from the University of Borås.

In order to obtain a residence permit you need to show that you have a comprehensive health insurance that covers the whole period you are in Sweden. You can receive an insurance certificate from the University of Borås. Please contact the International Student Services at internationalstudent@hb.se.

The insurance includes medical care, emergency dental care (max. 3000 SEK/year), home transport cover, accident cover, property cover, liability cover as well as legal expenses cover. The insurance cover applies 24-hours a day in the Schengen region whereas property cover only applies in Sweden. Please read more about the regulations, limitations and how to be reimbursed, in the Policy Conditions. The International Student Services will help you with your notification of damage.

Students who want to arrange for their own insurance can evaluate in Sweden accepted alternatives that are listed below.

The insurance plans listed above provide a refund option for students who are not able to come to Sweden to study as initially planned. Refer to the individual plans for details on the refund option.

Master students admitted to a 2-year programme and Bachelor students

Master students admitted to a 2-year programme and Bachelor students are staying in Sweden more than 365 days and can register for a Swedish personal identity number that gives them the right to the same free health care as Swedish citizens. Important: Note that this right only exists after creating such a number. Since it can take a couple of weeks for the personal identity number to be issued, the student needs to be insured by a private health insurance until then.

If you come to Sweden from a country outside the EU/EEA just to study, you are not entitled to subsidized dental care in Sweden. If you do not have insurance, you will have to pay the entire cost yourself if you need dental care, which can be very expensive. There are however some exceptions, you can find more information in Dental care in Sweden for foreign students.

For fee-paying students and waiver recipients the group insurance FAS+ covers emergency dental care for up to 3000 SEK/year. Costs exceeding this amount have to be covered by you. Alternatively you can arrange an additional private insurance.

Swedish social insurance does not cover property or losses from burglary, robbery, and other theft. Students should get a private insurance (for example a travel insurance from your home country) to cover this.

Swedish Institute scholarship holders

Swedish Institute scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period. Contact rita.wikander@si.se if you have questions or need to be reimbursed for medical costs.

Exchange students from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland

Exchange students from partner universities outside the EU/EEA as well as exchange students from within the EU/EEA who can demonstrate that they are not entitled to a European Health Insurance Card in their home country, are insured through "The Swedish State's Insurance for Foreign Students in Sweden" - a health insurance plan signed by the University of Borås. It grants you free medical treatment, including dental care for up to 3000 SEK a year, if the treatment becomes necessary during your stay in Sweden. The insurance is valid for the period of your studies, as well as two weeks prior to the start of studies and two weeks after the end of studies. It does not cover care which can be delayed until you return home, such as some types of dental treatment. Note that the insurance is only valid while you are in Sweden, not if you travel abroad.

"The Swedish State's Insurance for Foreign Students in Sweden" does not cover property or losses from burglary, robbery, and other theft. Students should get a private insurance (for example a travel insurance from your home country) to cover this.

Health insurance at the university during school hours

All students in Sweden are currently covered by the personal injury insurance (the general student insurance) that is obtained on behalf of universities and colleges within the State insurance system by the Central Student Grants Committee. The insurance applies in Sweden during school hours and during travel to and from the location where school hours are spent.

Property insurance

UB recommends all students that are not covered by FAS+ to individually purchase property insurance (in Swedish "hemförsäkring") from a Swedish or international insurance company. Personal property refers to everything that you own, e.g. clothing, mobile phones, computers, cameras etc. The insurance should also cover liability, legal expenses and travel insurance.

To be able to obtain property insurance in Sweden students need to have a Swedish personal identity number. If you do not have this number you need to turn to an international insurance company or one in your home country.
