Preparations for the thesis defence

As the defence of thesis approaches, many questions normally arise. This page will hopefully answer some of the more common questions.

Request to defend thesis

First, make sure that the planned date for defence of the thesis lays within the dates approved by the university. When the date for defence has been checked, a request is sent to the Research Education Committee (REC). Once the request has been assessed and approved by the REC, the decision is sent to you and the Principal supervisor by e-mail. The decision is concomitantly distributed to tother parties concerned by the REC.

Components of thesis

Each publication in a compilation thesis should be sent to the Research Education Committee as pdf-files (read more about exactly when this should be done under "Time-table").

Examining committee

Prior to the printing of your dissertation, the publications compiled in the thesis will be thoroughly scrutinized by an appointed Examining committee. The Committee will present a statement either approving or failing the results published, constituting the core of your thesis. The individuals in the committee will also declare whether or not they have any conflicts of interest regarding participation in the committee. See for more information Examining commitee.

Faculty examiner

The faculty examiner must sign an affidavit which certifies that there are no conflicts of interest. Once this has been done, additional information will be sent to the Faculty examiner from the REC. See for more information Faculty examiner

Notification of the doctoral thesis defence and E-notification

Before you nail your thesis to the log in the University library according to tradition, you should send a digital version of the thesis the Library (LLR) for E-notification in BADA. The digital copy of the thesis must be at LLR at least a week before you plan to go public with your thesis (i.e. the "nailing" event). LLR need a week for preparing the thesis digitally, thus you yourself need time to go through the document before sending it to LLR. All together, LLR must have a digital version 4 weeks before the  defence of the thesis. Also the REC need the digital version for assessment 4 weeks before your thesis defence.

Press release of thesis results

The Information Office at the University of Borås sends out press releases to the mass media every month regarding the contents of approved theses. The press release often brings interest from newspapers and occasionally radio or TV.
