Innovating Sustainable Everyday Travel

"Innovation for sustainable living travel" is a projects on two year aimed at developing knowledge of how digital information infrastructure and related services can contribute to the expansion of the share of public transport in total passenger transport system.

The aim must be realized through design-oriented action research in which researchers, providers of traffic information, providers of passenger transport and IT vendors in the interaction with everyday travelers co-create an open and customer-driven development of the future traveler information. The expected results from this research are important to improve the ability to use digital technology to expand the share of public transport in total passenger transport system.

Work packages

The project is divided into six work packages (AP)

AP1: Project Management

This work package includes project management activities such as budgeting, establishing and monitoring of projects and timetables.

AP2: Infrastructure Innovation

AP2 will be implemented as an action research cycle and is headed by Lennart Olsson at the SRA. In addition to SRA is Traffic Office and Västtrafik key partners. The aim of this AP is to develop practical and theoretical knowledge on how traveler information can be provided through an integrated and open information infrastructure. More specifically, work will result in an increased understanding of how these three players can combine their existing and future sources of information in innovative ways.

AP3: Service Innovation

AP3 will be implemented as an action research cycle and is headed by Associate Professor Michael Lind at the University of Borås and the Viktoria Institute. The aim of this AP is to identify, design and test two personalized services based on a new logic for combining infrastructure components.

The work takes rather based on the individual traveler needs to establish its own personalized service environment. This thinking is inspired by among others ”e-Me initiative”.

AP4: Travel today and tomorrow

AP4 is the purpose of developing a detailed understanding of both current everyday travel patterns, and how everyday forms of travel can be transformed as a result of changing societal opinion, introduction of new types of vehicles and craft, innovative technological opportunities, etc.

AP5: Value chain

AP5 will be led by Pär Mattisson, Viktoria Institute. The aim of this WP is to identify the conditions on the open market and customer grated delivery of personalized traveler information. Important in this context, for example, to identify what the different social actors (including transport authorities) are willing to provide and what other services operators can offer in terms of content or funding.

AP6: Sustainability

AP6 will be led by Dr. Raul Carlson at the Viktoria Institute. This AP has two main objectives. The first is to implement the principles of sustainability in the environment for innovation for everyday of travel services at a local level. The ambition is to contribute to the development of an innovation environment in Västra Götaland that prioritize and value the environment-friendly and sustainable technologies, services, and behavior. The second objective is to contribute to sustainable community development on a global scale by developing socio-technical experiences about how digital technology can expand the share of public transport in total passenger transport system.

The consortium behind the project consists of academic partners, providers of traffic information, providers of passenger transport and IT and service providers
