Tuition fees

EU/EEA Citizens

Citizens from countries in the EU/EEA do not have to pay tuition fees or application fees.

Non-EU/EEA Citizens

As of autumn 2011, all Swedish universities are required by law to charge tuition fees from students who are citizens of countries outside the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. There are, however, some exceptions to this general rule.

You are NOT required to pay application and tuition fees if:

  • You study within an exchange programme
  • You have Swedish citizenship.
  • You have been granted a permanent Swedish residence permit.
  • You have been granted a temporary Swedish residence permit for reasons other than studies. (Having a temporary residence permit for studies in Sweden does NOT grant you exemption from fee payments).
  • You are a family member of a citizen of an EU or EEA country, or Switzerland, who has temporary or permanent right of residence in Sweden.
  • You have long-term resident status in Sweden.
  • You have long-term resident status in another country in the European Union and have Swedish residency.
  • You are applying for or are registered for Third cycle (doctoral) studies. Application and tuition fees are only required for studies at the First cycle (Bachelor) and Second cycle (Master’s) level.

Costs

Tuition fees vary depending on the programme you choose. The exact fee for a specific programme can be found on the same page as the programme description.

Application fee

The application fee is 900 SEK.

Requirements for students who have started a course or programme in Sweden

  • If you are a registered student at a Swedish University or University college at the time you submit your application, you are not required to pay an application fee.
  • If you started a course or programme before 1 July 2011, you may finish that course or programme without paying tuition fees. If you apply for and are given a place in a new course or programme that starts after 1 July 2011, you must pay a tuition fee for the new course or programme.
  • If you are combining courses towards a degree (but are not officially registered in a programme), you may finish that course without paying a tuition fee if you started it before 1 July 2011. If you start a new course or courses after 1 July 2011, you will be required to pay tuition fees for that course/ courses.

Tutition fee refunds

The University of Borås does not refund tuition fees unless it has been established that special circumstances exist which makes it impossible for the student to attend lectures. If the student for some reason is suspended (completely or temporary), the university does not refund the tuition fees.

Appeal procedure

If you are suspended because you have not paid the tuition fees on time, you have the right to appeal the suspension to the Board of Appeal. No other decisions regarding payment of tuition fees can be subject to appeal.

You can read more about the tuition fees at the University of Borås here.
