Spring Term 2012
The School and the Community (SCOM), 30 ECTS
SCOM is a European, interdisciplinary course being developed in the bachelor programme of the faculties of Social Work and Education of five European universities from The Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland and Turkey. The SCOM course will provide a comparative European perspective on the cooperation of schools with parents and welfare, care and culture organisations outside school as the key to an integrated approach of educational deprivations and how this cooperation will contribute to community development. Students will gain extra knowledge, skills and attitude on working in these partnerships together with social workers and educationalists.
During this course, students will study and compare policy, content and procedures of schools and social work institutions and visit schools to compare the cooperation between the local social workers, educationalists and parents. As a result, they will formulate European innovative recommendations for optimising policy, content and procedures for preschools, primary or secondary schools and for institutions in the field of Social Work.
There will be workshops, lectures, and desk and field research. There will also be a Swedish as a foreign language course to make it easier for you to be able to communicate with the pupils in the schools. The module will be assessed by peer review, presentations and writing papers. There will be both an oral and a written exam in the Swedish course.
