We are changing the shelving at LLR.
From 2011 we will be classifying the books with the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC)
We have, as most other Swedish libraries, previously used the Swedish SAB-system, based on letters, but are now switching to the Dewey system. This means that we are changing from a system of letters to one with numbers and with that a system that is much more internationally marketable than our present.
The reason for the change is that the National Library of Sweden, and thus a number of other Swedish University and College Libraries, have decided to change to Dewey.
Pardon the mess, we are reorganizing
During spring and summer 2012 we will reorganize the books on floor 2.5 through 4, to follow the Dewey system. Since nearly 70 000 books will be moved and re-labeled it will take time, and during the work some disorder on the shelves is unavoidable. We will begin at small scale during the semester and intensify the work in the summer.
Finding books being relocated
In the catalog, some items will have two shelving statuses. This is a sign that the book is either soon to be, currently being, or just have been moved. The label Call number indicates the previous shelf, while the future shelf is labeled Alternative call number.
First look for the book at the shelf from Call number, at the floor specified by Location. If the books that used to be at that shelf have already been moved, you should find some information there. Then look for the shelf from Alternative call number. There should be signs in the library guiding you to the floor where it is located. Please contact the library staff if you don’t find what you want or need help in any way. We are glad to help you.
New and old books together again
New books has since 2011 been placed by Dewey classification at a separate "Dewey shelf" that eventually grew to a section in the library. This separation of old and new books will end when we now relocate the older books by Dewey-class as well.
Exceptions
Fiction, children's books and educational material will not be relocated by the Dewey system, but will remain at the same call numbers as before.
