Degree Awards, prior 1 July 2007

The following general degrees may be awarded to students that began their studies before 1 July 2007:

Master of/in (Magisterexamen)

The Master of can be obtained after completing course requirements amounting to at least 160 credit points*. Advanced studies, requiring a minimum of 160 credit points with 80 credit points in the major subject including one thesis/degree project of 20 or two thesis/degree projects of 10 credit points each. Credit may be given for 40 credit points from post graduate studies in the main subject.

The main specialisation of the degree shall be stated in the degree certificate. The University of Borås requires that the courses forming part of the main subject be composed in the following manner:

  • The main subject must carry at least 20 credit points at the 41-60 level** and at least 20 credit points at the 61-80 level

OR

  • The main subject must carry at least 40 credit points at the 41-80 level of which at least 20 credit points must be at the 61-80 level.

Bachelor of/in (Kandidatexamen)

A Bachelor of/in can be obtained after completing course requirements amounting to at least 120 credit points. Advanced studies requires a minimum of 120 credit points with 60 credit points in the major subject including a thesis/degree project of 10 credit points.
The main specialisation of the degree shall be stated in the degree certificate.

The University of Borås requires that the courses forming part of the main subject be composed in the following manner:

  • The major subject must carry a total of at least 20 credit points and the courses must be at the 41-60 level.

Diploma

A Diploma may be obtained after completing course requirements of a total of at least 80 credit points with appropriate specialisation as determined and approved by the Institution of higher education concerned.

The main specialisation of the degree shall be stated in the degree certificate.

In order to be awarded a Diploma from the University of Borås, a candidate must, besides satisfying the requirements in the general regulations, have at least 40 credit points in one and the same subject.

Professional Degrees (Yrkesexamen)

Programmes of studies that lead to a profession requiring a formal recognised authorisation or competence, are concluded with the award of a Professional Degree/Diploma of other relevant certification.

The University of Borås awards the following professional degrees/certifications:

  • Bachelor in Education in Child and Youth Education
  • Bachelor in Education for the Compulsory School (with specialisation in Swedish Language and Social Science, grades 1-7)
  • Bachelor in Education for the Compulsory School (with specialisation in Mathematics and Science, grades 1-7). (Note: The above mentioned awards are valid only for those candidates who commenced their studies before July 1, 2001.)
  • Bachelor in Education. (Note: This is a new degree and it will replace all of the three mentioned above. This degree will be awarded to successful students enrolled after July 1, 2001.)
  • Graduate Diploma in Midwifery
  • Graduate Diploma in Emergency Care Specialist Nursing
  • Graduate Diploma in Psychiatric Care Specialist Nursing
  • Graduate Diploma in Elderly Care Specialist Nursing
  • Graduate Diploma in Primary Health Care Specialist
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • University Diploma in Applied Technology with specialisation in Textile and Clothing Manufacturing
  • Vocational Degree in Design Technology
  • Vocational Degree in Applied Technology within the field of heat and Electric Power Engineering
  • Vocational Degree in Applied Technology within the field of Civil Engineering

Since June 2002 the University of Borås is vested with the right to award the Master’s Degree (Magisterexamen) in all fields of study.


* The Swedish academic year is divided into two semesters. Each semester comprises twenty weeks. One weeks work (lectures, projects work, laboratories, individual reading etc,) is equivalent to one credit point. There are thus twenty Swedish credit points to one semester. One Swedish Credit point is equivalent to 1,5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

** Studies at Swedish higher education institutions are organised in a “level” system. Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced level. Basic (A) level corresponds to 1-20 credit points or Basic (G) level: 1-40 credit points. Intermediate (B) level: 21-40 credit point, Advanced level 1 (C): 41-60 credit points and Advanced level 2 (D): 61-80 credit points.
