What is Erasmus?

Erasmus is the EU:s largest program for higher education. The program aims to improve the quality and increase the cooperation between higher education institutions across Europe. Erasmus is part of the EU program for education and training that is called The Lifelong Learning Programme. The programme is named after the European philosopher, theologian and humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam (1465-1536). The acronym ERASMUS may also be read as EuRopean Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students.

Who can apply?

As a regular program student of the University of Borås you have the possibility to study appr. 3-12 months at another higher education institution in Europe that the University of Borås has an inter-institutional Erasmus agreement with. The host institution has to be a holder of an Erasmus University Charter.

You must be enrolled at least in the second year of higher education studies when you go for exchange studies. You can only be an Erasmus study exchange student one time.

Application

Every Academic School of the University of Borås has Erasmus agreements with partner universities in Europe. Please contact the international coordinator at your Academic School for more information.

Financing

As an Erasmus student you are exempted from paying fees for tuition, registration, examinations and access to laboratory and library facilities at the host institution. In the academic year 2011/2012 Erasmus students received 1200€ per semester. The first payment is made at the beginning of the semester. An optional other payment is made after submitted the mandatory STARS report (see below) and after full academic recognition of satisfactorily completed activities during the Erasmus mobility period (that is, you must have completed the courses accordingly to the  learning agreement).

For students with special needs the Erasmus grant is higher than the normal study or placement grant to offset the specific difficulties with which you are faced.

As an Erasmus student you have to submit a report about your studies abroad in Stars - Study Abroad Report System. There is an electronic form with your name and Swedish personal identity number (the same as in Ladok) in Stars. You use your Swedish personal identity number to log in to the system. Once you have completed the questionnaire it will be reviewed in accordance with the Swedish Personal Register Law by the officer in charge of Stars at the University of Borås. Your answers and opinions may be searchable via the Stars website but you remain anonymous.

Erasmus Intensive Language Course (EILC)

Erasmus Intensive Language Courses are available to Erasmus students studying in non-English, -French, -German and -Spanish speaking countries. EILCs take place in the host country during two to six weeks in August/September or January/February. The EILC generally covers both language and culture classes. EILC students are eligible for an additional scholarship of 150€ per week during the course period (provided that the EILC period does not coincide with the training period in which case the student will not have the additional EILC grant).

Please find the list of universities in Europe that organize EILC on the European Commission's web page on EILC. On the same page you will also find the application form to fill out and send via e-mail to the officer in charge of the Erasmus study program, Ms. Helena.Gjertz@hb.se. Ms Gjertz will forward the application to the university organizing the EILC who will then select the students.
