Internet connection with your own computer

Are you bringing your own computer to the library? There are two ways for you to connect to the Internet with your own computer. You can connect by using a network cable in any of the study rooms in the library, or you can connect wireless to the universitys wireless network. Instructions for both of theese alternatives are given below.

Connection by cable

If you have a portable computer with a network card installed, you could reach the internet in all our group study rooms.

Connect your computer to the green, network VPMS-socket. (Network cables can be borrowed from the information point on floor 2.) You will then automatically be guided to a secure net behind a firewall. To access the internet through this firewall, you must log in by using the web address http://10.1.1.1 and then state your ordinary user id and your password. The computer has to be set for a dynamic allocation of ip-numbers.

The connection now gives you contact with the internet, not with the university network as given to you when you log on to one of the stationary computers. This means that there is no ordinary “Start menu XP” and the software you are about to use must be installed on your own computer. If you want to access files that have been stored on your area, you must use ftp.

You will find more information on the IT-department web site, under “Publika datauttag”. For information about how to reach files on your own area, see “Studentinformation”.

Connection to the wireless network

We are presently undergoing an expansion of our wireless network. In connection to this, we have also rebuilt the existing wireless network which leads to certain changes. If you want to connect to the wireless net you need a computer with a wireless network card.

  • Connect to the network named HB.
  • IP number and other settings are given automatically.
  • Open a web browser and go to any web site, e.g. www.hb.se

You will then automatically end up at a log-in page where you log in using the same user-id and password as when using the stationary university computers.

Note:

  • We support 802.11 b/g (plus 802.11a at some places)
  • There are currently approximately 70 access points which gives coverage in most parts of the buildings H, J, K, L, M and N. In the Balder building the coverage is slightly lower but extensions are being made.(Please give us your views about the coverage by mailing 4690@hb.se)
  • Our firewall assigns all clients an IP number in the series 10.10.xxx.xxx
  • Note that the net is not coded! Therefore, avoid using unsafe protocols as telnet and ftp (use ssh and sftp instead)

Trouble-shooting:

  • If it works for other users, then the trouble is in the computer, not the net…
  • Restart your computer and try again.
  • Check if the computer has received a correct IP address (10.10.xxx.xxx).
  • Update Windows. Some Windows versions do not allow unsafe/uncoded wireless networks.
  • Make sure that a security software does not restrict access to unsafe wireless nets.
  • Always use an updated active anti virus kit for your computer!
