Graphic Profile

The University's graphic profile is a set of rules regulating the University related graphics. It stipulates which colors and fonts may be used as well as the placement of the logo in various documents.

The Peddler

The silhouette of a man, symbolising the merchant figure  from the Sjuhärad region, the Peddler, dominates the University of Borås's shield.  From early medieval times, the Sjuhärad region came to stand out through a particularly prosperous economic and social development based on trade and manufacturing. Other areas with similar experiences can be found in northern Italy, in southern Germany, in the Flanders and in England. It is these areas that are forerunners when it comes to making recoveries from economic crises, as they find brand new ways of business, thus creating social and economic progress.  Through its choice of symbol, the University wants to connect to the historical character of the region.

The University's Symbol Language

The logo of the University of Borås is a heraldic shield, and as such it is bound by certain rules concerning the choice of symbols and colors. The laurel wreath is proof of academia. The  wool cutters symbolise the city of Borås, and the shield carries a royal crown, demonstrating that the University is an authority under the government. The colored version of the shield in yellow and black follows the colors of Västra Götaland.

”In a field of gold, a peddler carrying over his left shoulder a cloth sack, on his left arm a piece of cloth, in his left hand an ell staff and in his right hand a bell, all in black. The shield carries a royal crown and is flanked by a laurel wreath which at the knot is covered by two wool cutters, the dexter turned down, all in gold."

Emblazonment

The text describing a heraldic shield is called blazon. In other words, it is based on the blazon that the shield of the University of Borås was created. Naturally, there is room for some degree of artistic freedom when it comes to interpretation of the blazon.
