The meaning(s) of consumption

The meaning(s) of consumption

The study intends to investigate the meaning(s) of consumption among low-income consumers. Knowledge is today limited regarding how low-income consumers are oriented towards consumption. The study intends to increase this understanding, deepen earlier knowledge in this area and provide new research questions for futures studies. Consumption of today occurs in a context of material affluence and must be understood from new perspectives. In order to understand how the consumer society influences different groups, it is important to study the ones who are marginalized, in particular in a development of widening income gaps nationally as well as internationally. By studying consumption among low-income consumers, we can gain more knowledge about the meaning(s) of consumption for experiences and for the significance of participating in the mainstream society. The study is based on interviews with families.
