About our research
The field of textiles and fashion is among the areas in which the University of Borås, through the Swedish School of Textiles, has a national responsibility for both the development of the artistic perspective and the collaboration between art and science.
The Textiles and Fashion area focuses on the subjects of design, textile technology, and textile management and examines the definitions, methods, and models related to the development and application of textiles and fashion in research, industry, and society at large.
The field studies the relationships between materials and design variables for function and expression in the development and production of textiles and fashion, as well as the connection between economics and design variables (resources) for the function and expression of the production, sustainability, distribution, and trade of textiles and fashion.
The development of the textiles field is conducted primarily through the research programmes of ArcInTexETN, Body andSpace, Re:textile, Smart Textiles and SMDTex as well as the research projects funded by H2020, Eurostars, VINNOVA, the Knowledge Foundation, SSF, Sparbanks Foundation, Borås City and the Foundation for Swedish Textile Research.
The purpose of ArcInTexETN is to examine the design of more sustainable ways of living and working through interdisciplinary research and education in the subjects of textile design and science, fashion, production and architecture. The concept of textile thinking is central in the research but also for interdisciplinary learning. The project offers a nomadic structure for doctoral education and connects industry partners with academia to identify current and future design challenges and to develop tomorrow's new artistic leadership. Body and Space
The purpose of Body and Space is to investigate and develop new types of clothes and models for design, expression, and functionally. Through experimental artistic design, the research examines fundamental ontological, logical and epistemological questions to deepen knowledge about clothing in relation to body and space for new perspectives on fashion design and new ways of thinking about wearing.

The purpose of Re:textile is to create a structure for circular flows in textiles for a more sustainable lifestyle through design development and the development of new business models. The project's long-term goal is that, from the beginning of the design phase, think about circular flows and develop products and business models for a longer life. The purpose of Smart Textiles is to develop the programme into a driving and unifying force for the development of textiles with high knowledge content for intelligent and functional textiles through structured interaction between business-driven development projects and experimental research institutes, colleges, and universities. Smart Textiles is an interdisciplinary research and development programme, which include textile technology, textile design, and textile management.
The purpose of SMDTex (Sustainable Management and Design in Textiles) is to develop an interdisciplinary research and education programme within textile technology, textile design, textile chemistry and other areas, such as production, supply chain management, quality management, brand and fashion management, information systems, data mining, virtual reality and consumer studies. Knowledge about sustainable and innovative design processes and materials will also be themes in SMDTex. Read more about SMDTex (external link).
