Horizon 2020 is the framework programme created by the European Union in order to support and encourage research and innovation in the European Research Area. H2020 is the largest programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding.

The goal with the H2020 programme is to ensure that more breakthroughs and world-class science and novel innovations are used to create new jobs, tackle societal challenges, safeguard Europe’s global competitiveness and growth. The programme is open to everyone; universities, business, industry, SME, public sector and civil society with three priorities.

Excellent science activities aim to make the European Union’s research and innovation system more competitive on a global scale. The following different schemes under this pillar are found:
European Research Council (ERC) to attractive talented and creative individual researchers. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions promoting researcher’s mobility internationally. Future and emerging technologies that support collaborative research for advanced and paradigm-changing innovation and Research infrastructure.
The goal is to make Europa a more attractive location to invest in research and innovation, creating jobs, maximize growth potential of European companies and in particular help innovative SMEs to grow into world-leading companies. The focus will be on developing European industrial capabilities in the following areas/technologies:
- Micro- and Nanotechnologies
- Advanced Materials
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Processing, and Biotechnology.
This Horizon 2020 pillar focuses on the major concerns shared by citizens in Europe i.e. how to tackle the ageing populations, climate changes, sustainable energy and food security. The challenge-based approach will be to bring together knowledge across different disciplines, including social sciences and humanities.
