THE SWEDISH SCHOOL OF TEXTILES
Sara Hultman
Year 2022

Sculpting textile form is a bachelor degree work in textile design. The work position itself within the field of weaving ,more specifically jacquard woven three-dimensional weaving for a spatial context. The intention of the work is to showcase multi-expressional sculptural textile objects. The project proposes that through multilayered weave and choice of material and placement of material in layers three-dimensional objects can be created with ability to both be an uniquely sculpted as isolated designed piece or combined through self-interlocking several pieces design a larger object. The suggested solutions in this project to the field of weaving are that textiles can be made industrially yet hold value as a hand made piece as well as decrease scale and change expression without stitches.

Development in the project has been experimental and practice-led using industrial techniques in combination with sculpting each piece off-loom.  As an outcome of the project, four rectangular patterns were created in an industrial jacquard loom where each piece comes out flat. Each flat multilayered textile is sculpted by hand with water and heat to a three-dimensional textile piece. Each piece of the collection can be isolated or mounted together with another piece creating a larger scaled sculpted object. Furthermore, this is creating a collection in the collection since even the ‘same’ piece is unrepeatable due to the after treatment and therefore unique in its appearance with small differences in colour, texture and form.
