My general area of research is critical and sociological perspectives on education, policy, and digitalisation.
Since the beginning of year 2000, I have been active in researching the integration of digital technology into schools. My studies of digitalisation take as its point of departure a critical examination of the discourse around technological determinism: that digital technology has the ability to revolutionise teaching, schools, and education systems.
In recent years, I have studied how globalisation, marketing, and the neoliberal governance of schools and education have enabled the private EdTech industry to profit from education, but also how digital platforms, infrastructures, and data management affect teaching, teachers’ and schools' work – and in the long run, education systems as well.
I have also been active in research on the consequences of political governance of teacher education for the teaching profession's knowledge base as well as the consequences for the teaching profession of the introduction of career teachers in Swedish schools.
At the University of Borås, I lead the research group Higher education, practice, and politics (or HUPP for its Swedish name, Högre utbildning, praxis och politik). I am also a Project Leader for FIPA, a project that aims to establish a doctoral programme in educational work at the university.
I am also the Senior Editor of the international scientific journal: Journal of Praxis in Higher Education
