LINEA FLORALIS - Exploring Knitted Expressions
Year 2022

Flowers have been an important part of clothing ever since the first floral silk embroideries in the 12th century and have been used in many different ways. The purpose of this study is to propose an alternative way of being inspired by flowers in a knitwear context. Knitting as a way of making clothes has great benefits such as waste minimization when knitting fully fashioned, size inclusivity, and material exploration. Therefore, this work aims to explore knitted expressions through abstracting naturally curved lines in striped flowers with the intention to generate form-giving textures in knitwear. The work was conducted by observing the lines within the chosen striped flowers and translating these into knitted structures which were then draped onto the body to find the form-giving possibilities of the material. The outcome of this study is a knitwear collection where all garments are knitted fully fashioned and with minimal waste.
