Repeating Patterns

Malva Kling

An exploration of jacquard woven floral surface patterns Through texture, depth, color and scale this work approaches atmospheric design. Translating the feeling of floral motifs into textiles. The patterns invite you to share the familiar and universal experience of florals.

Three different florals: Dahlia, Lupin and Geraniums. Encountered, then collected through photos and notes from my everyday life. Serving both as literal inspiration and in an emotional way. Translating them into hand drawn sketches, refined in Photoshop and finally woven into a textile.

By mimicking expressions of print, the designed patterns are woven using four colors; mixing and combining them in different ways using e.g. floats, additional colors can be created, similar to the effects of overlapping colors from screen printing. Depth is achieved through precision and rich colors, creating a sense of visual tactility. The result is a series of woven textiles that creates a calm atmosphere.
