Motherbirther

Patricia Kristiansen

This work operates at the intersection of knit design and tactile experience, insisting on a bodily relationship through touch. In an era of digital fatigue and a loss of tactile knowledge, the project reprioritizes physical engagement as a necessary counterbalance to the dominance of visual stimuli. The conceptual framework stems from a fascination with childbirth as a profoundly tactile phenomenon, defined by intense sensations and contrasts—physically, mentally, and visually.

Through three-dimensional structures, the practice materializes the tension between expectation and lived experience. Moving beyond traditional craft, knitting is utilized as a specialized method of form-giving. By manipulating stitch tension, volume, and material contrast, the pieces provoke sensory incongruence, opening a space for the viewer to reconnect with the material and re-explore touch as a vital sense.
