Research Area 1 (RA1)

AI for Textile Recycling and Production

Research Area 1 (RA1) focuses on using AI to enable a more efficient and robust transition to circular textile production. Central to this is the development of intelligent systems for sorting, material identification and quality assessment of textile waste – critical steps to enable recycled materials to be used on an industrial scale.

Advanced image analysis, sensor data and predictive models create solutions that can identify material properties, detect defects and optimise process parameters in real time. This reduces variations in recycled fibres and improves stability in, for example, weaving and knitting – an area where the industry today faces major challenges.

An important development track is also AI-based decision support for operators, where systems provide recommendations for machine setup, troubleshooting and maintenance. This helps to reduce dependence on tacit knowledge and increase reproducibility in production.

In the long term, RA1 is not just about streamlining existing processes, but about enabling completely new production logics where recycled materials can be used with the same precision and quality as virgin raw materials.
