AI for the Optimisation of Textile Ecosystems

Research Area 4 (RA4) takes a systems perspective and focuses on how AI can be used to optimise the entire textile value chain, from raw materials to consumers and recycling. The goal is to enable more circular and resource-efficient flows through data-driven decisions.

A key challenge is to integrate data from many different actors with varying systems and conditions. RA4 therefore develops methods for data standardisation, integration and analysis, often in combination with technologies such as IoT and blockchain.

AI-based models can forecast demand, optimise inventory and manage material flows more efficiently. This creates better conditions for reducing overproduction, waste and transport costs.

A particular focus is on the development of new business models, where AI enables service-based offerings such as repair, reuse and circular flows. RA4 thus contributes to a transformation from linear to circular systems – where value is created through data, transparency and long-term resource utilisation.
