An Intimate Encounter

Malva Brandt

An investigation of sight and touch through surface patterns In the late eighteenth century, the Prince of Wales sent a miniature painting of his eye to his secret lover instead of a ring, writing: If you have not totally forgotten the whole countenance, I think the likeness will strike you. Their relationship became marked by melodrama and longing, and the lover’s eye emerged as an intimate token of devotion within the British aristocracy.

Drawing on historical objects of affection such as lover’s eye jewellery and Swedish courting gifts from the 18th and 19th centuries — often decorated tools for textile care and production — this work examines the essence of the love object from a contemporary perspective

Surface design is explored by combining digital print and felting, producing surfaces that are both visually engaging and tactile, inviting close looking and touch. More broadly, the work reflects on intimate space and the work of attention: that which we offer to one another, and to the objects we hold dear.
