The Fragmented Nature of a Fence

Annika Keisa

This project investigates the ideas surrounding an imbalance between the industrial and the natural, which are explored through an example of a fence within a landscape, used as a reference for the intersection between the two. The collection materialises this tension through hardware-based construction, draping through folds, and material development.

Industrial closures, such as wires and screws, are used as garment assembly methods, while simple folds reference the fluidity and rawness of nature. This imbalance is further reflected in a composite material developed by heat-bonding natural fibres between two layers of plastic. Like a fence obscuring the landscape behind it, the material plays with visibility and concealment: from a distance it appears entirely plastic, while closer inspection reveals the flax fibres trapped within, reflecting the dominance of the industrial over the natural.
