Seminar: Accelerated, Assisted, Automated? Critical Reflections on AI-Supported Qualitative Analysis

We are delighted to invite Dr Piotr Binder from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences, as a speaker at our seminar.
Piotr Binder holds a PhD in sociology and has been working as a researcher at IFiS PAN in Warsaw since 2014. He specializes in qualitative methodology with a particular focus on digital tools such as MAXQDA and has been a certified MAXQDA trainer since 2018. In a digital age where work and lifestyle changes occur rapidly, Piotr Binder offers unique expertise in how qualitative research can be designed, conducted, and analyzed using digital tools.
This seminar is especially relevant for researchers, teachers, and doctoral students who work with or are interested in qualitative methods and digital research approaches.

Seminar description:

This seminar offers a critical examination of how emerging AI-supported features in qualitative data analysis software—such as automated coding, text summarization and categorisation, and algorithmic code suggestions—are reshaping qualitative research practice. Drawing on concrete examples from contemporary software tools, the session uses these developments as a lens to explore broader methodological tensions introduced by AI-assisted analysis. These include challenges to long-standing principles such as immersion, close reading, and researcher-led interpretation, as well as questions of rigor, transparency, and the ethics of delegating analytical work to algorithmic systems. At the same time, the seminar considers potential opportunities: new forms of analytical support, accelerated workflows, and the reconfiguration of routine tasks. By situating current AI functionalities within ongoing debates in qualitative methodology, the talk invites a grounded discussion on what is gained—and what may be lost—as qualitative analysis becomes increasingly accelerated, assisted, and automated.
