A super advanced microscope boosts the research at the Swedish School of Textiles

“Previously, using a conventional optical microscope, we could only obtain an image of the textile fibres we study down to one micrometre. Beyond that, we had to speculate about what they looked like. With the new scanning electron microscope, we can obtain images with a resolution of down to 100 nanometres,” said Junchun Yu, Associate Professor at the Department of Textile Technology.

This means a great deal for both research and education at the Swedish School of Textiles. Unlike conventional electron microscopes, which more or less fill an entire room and require a technician to operate them, the new microscope is a desktop model, stands next to a computer, and can be operated by a single person.

The microscope was purchased thanks to funding from the foundation Sparbanken Sjuhärads Ägarstiftelse.

“We are extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to purchase it,” said Junchun Yu.
