Time to apply for the CVS planning grant for 2027
2026-10-28
The project must fall within one of CVS's three focus areas, cross-sector collaboration, skills supply in the welfare sector, or the challenges and opportunities of digitalisation. The project also must involve collaboration outside the applicant's own research environment.
One researcher who has received a CVS planning grant and is now preparing funding applications is Jesse Dinneen, Senior Lecturer at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science. He talks about the progress he has made with his research into the handling of deceased people's personal data and the dilemmas surrounding it.
– In Europe, the responsible handling of personal data is encouraged by regulation and professional guidelines, however in these the personal data of the deceased are generally ignored or excluded despite numerous issues and harms that could arise as a result. With that in mind, my project examines the handling of data about deceased people with state institutions as its setting. I will in particular use empirical methods to identify the practices, perceptions, and challenges of welfare-related workers handling such data, apply relevant ethical frameworks to notable cases to identify normative boundaries, and combine the empirical and theoretical results to make recommendations for practical guidelines and data-handling policy.
A great help in the process
So far, he has submitted the first of two applications and has begun drafting the second. The first, which was submitted to Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ), was rejected in the first round, and he is now preparing to submit a new application. He says that the CVS planning grant has been a great help throughout the process.
– As I had already completed a literature review and conceptual framework to motivate the above work, the funding provided by CVS reserved hours in my working time to design the studies, draft the grant applications, solicit feedback from colleagues and revise accordingly. Without the funding it is unlikely I would have had time to develop the project idea into tenable funding applications, he said.
What is your next step?
– The second funding application will be submitted, likely to Forte as a standard research project, in the beginning of 2027. Since their funding scheme requirements differ from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) and further materials are required for the application, my next immediate step is to finish adapting and expanding the RJ application and distribute it among some colleagues for their helpful feedback.
What advice can you share to others who consider applying for research projects and about the CVS planning funding?
– Since funding is competitive and complex, apply early and apply often, but of course also weigh your chances and the administrative costs of a grant against the benefits of it being funded. I highly recommend consulting our very helpful colleagues in the Grants and Innovation Office as well as those with funding experience in your department and to talk early on with your local economist, who can help you prepare the necessary budget.

The Centre for Welfare Studies (CVS) is offering planning grants of SEK 125,000 (including overhead costs). The grant is intended to give researchers at the University of Borås time to prepare applications to external research funders. The planning grant is to be used during 2027 to prepare a project application that is adapted and submitted to at least two external research funders.
