Doctoral education: Information Systems

The programme addresses issues related to digital infrastructures, artificial intelligence, data-driven decision-making, and automation. A key focus is how these solutions can contribute to innovation, efficiency, and sustainable development. The programme combines information systems research with expertise in textile and fashion design, textile technology, and textile management within the broader research area of Textiles and Fashion. Overall, the research is characterised by a combination of theoretical depth and applied, design oriented, and action oriented research conducted in close collaboration with external partners. 
 
The doctoral education programme forms part of the research area Textiles and Fashion and is conducted in close connection with Textile Fashion Center. This provides excellent opportunities for collaboration with industry, public-sector organisations, and other research environments. Doctoral students are members of active research groups and participate in research projects and international collaborations. They present their work in both academic and professional contexts. The research environment provides access to relevant research infrastructure, laboratories, and digital platforms.
 
The programme comprises four years of full-time study leading to a doctoral degree, or two years leading to a licentiate degree. It consists of both coursework and an independent research project. The programme includes compulsory elements such as seminars and concludes with a thesis that is publicly defended. As a doctoral student, you will develop the ability to conduct independent research and apply critical and analytical thinking within the fields of digitalisation and information systems. You will also strengthen your competence in designing and evaluating digital solutions, enhance your communication and teaching skills, and build a broad academic and professional network.
 
To be admitted, applicants must hold a Master's degree (second-cycle qualification) or possess equivalent knowledge. Selection is based on an overall assessment of academic qualifications, analytical ability, independence, and communication skills, with particular emphasis on their relevance to the doctoral education programme.
