Applications for Academic Promotion including Docentship

Promotion

As a teacher at the University of Borås, you can apply to be promoted to a higher academic standing as Senior lecturer, Assistant Professor or (Full) Professor depending on your current position. To apply for promotion, please email hr@hb.se and notify us that you wish to submit an application; we will then get back to you with information on how to upload your documents for the application.

The following documents should be attached to your application:

  • A cover sheet specifying position sought and subject. If you wish to be promoted within an adjacent academic area this should be highlighted and clarified.
  • An overview list of education and work experience in chronological order (CV).
  • A merit portfolio.
  • A certificate of completed studies in teaching and learning in higher education.
  • A certificate of completed doctoral supervision course (applies to Professor and Associate Professor only).
  • A photo-copy of doctoral degree certificate.
  • A complete list of publications
  • The selected publications (maximum of 10) to be considered as support for this application, to be attached as separate electronic files.

Instructions for the merit portfolio

The merit portfolio should contain an account of the applicant's experience in research, education, administration (including development and management of activities and personnel), information on research work and collaboration with the surrounding society. The promotion process

  1. Email hr@hb.se and notify us that you wish to submit an application; we will then get back to you with information on how to upload your documents for the application.
  2. The decision to move forward with a promotion application is made by the Dean of Faculty or, alternatively, the Vice-Chancellor when it comes to Professors.
  3. The application is sent for review to external experts.
  4. Then, the application is sent to the Employment Committee for a recommendation in regards to the decision.
  5. The Head of Department or Vice-Chancellor will then make a decision about promotion.

Simplified procedure for promotion to Senior Lecturer
For a Lecturer who is employed until further notice (tillsvidareanställning) and who holds a doctorate in the relevant field of study and has completed  training in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (högskolepedagogisk utbildning), the process can be carried out according to a simplified procedure, without the review by external experts.

Such an application for promotion can only be made after six months as an employee employed until further notice at the University of Borås.

Docentship/Associate Professor status

To apply for Docent/Associate Professor status, please email to hr@hb.se and notify us that you wish to submit an application; we will then get back to you with information on how to upload your documents for the application.

The following documents should be attached to your application:

  • A cover sheet with the following content: "Application for the Academic Rank of Unpaid Docent (Associate Professor /US/), or Docenture, in (subject) at the University of Borås". The application is addressed to the Academic Appointment Committee's Research and Education Board or the Artistic Research and Education Board.
  • A merit portfolio.
  • A statement by a professor at the relevant Faculty who approves the applicant's docenture competence and takes into account the benefit to the Faculty and the university of the applicant being accepted for docenture, and the signature of the Dean of Faculty who through signing the document gives consent to the application.
  • A certificate of completed studies in teaching and learning in higher education.
  • A certificate of completed doctoral supervision course.
  • The selected publications (maximum of 10) to be considered as support for this application, to be attached as separate electronic files.

The process for applying for Docent/Associate Professor status

  1. Email hr@hb.se and notify us that you wish to submit an application; we will then get back to you with information on how to upload your documents for the application.
  2. The application is then sent to the Employment Committee for examination of the application documents in order to ensure that the benefits for the university's research and education are proven.
  3. The application is sent for review to external experts.
  4. After their opinions have been received, the application is sent to the Board for a decision regarding the status of Docent/Associate Professor. Docent certificates are issued by the secretary of the Board.
