Police education will be conducted in its own Faculty

Since its start, the programme has been organisationally placed at the Faculty of Caring Science, Work Life and Social Welfare.

“During the summer of 2018, the news came that the police education programme would start. As soon thereafter as January 2019, our first students arrived. We then found a way to organise the programme as a unit under the Faculty of Caring Science, Work Life and Social Welfare (A2), but we knew that we would need to review its organisation as the programme grew,” said Vice-Chancellor Mats Tinnsten.

The police education programme, which is a contract education, has a turnover of approximately SEK 100 million and is today is at its full strength with 576 students and 40 police trainers.

“A major reason for the organisational change is in order for us to be able to continue to comply with the regulations and legal provisions in place, both when it comes to finances and organisation. But it is also about developing the academic part of the education. Our long-term goal, provided that the necessary decisions are made by our politicians, is to provide academic police education with programmes at the graduate level, both Master’s and doctoral. This is a development that has taken place in our nursing education and healthcare research,” explained Mats Tinnsten.

The programme in Borås has the highest number of applicants of all such programmes in Sweden, and from the autumn of 2021, the programme will be expanded by two classes.

“It is very gratifying that our programme is doing so well, but pride goes before fall. It is important that we change our organisation to structure ourselves in a more sustainable way, and that in the future we have the conditions to develop and take advantage of the great start we have had with our police education programme,” concluded Mats Tinnsten.

The Faculty of Police Work will be headed by acting Dean of Faculty Lotta Dalheim Englund and include two departments: the Department of Campus Police Education and the Department of Distance Police Education.

Staff and students will belong to the new Faculty from 1/1 2021. However, it may take until 1/7 2021 before the students organizational affiliation is updated in all systems such as Ladok and PING PONG.
