Insurance

All students to the University of Borås are covered by a personal injury insurance, but further insurance is necessary to cover medical care in case of illness. Most students are covered by the Swedish social insurance or a European social insurance. Some students have additional insurance through the university. These insurances does not provide a complete coverage and we recommend all student to make sure they have sufficient coverage. Below you can read more about different insurances and requirements.

Personal injury insurance at the university during school hours

All students in Sweden are covered by the personal injury insurance that is obtained on behalf of universities and colleges within the State insurance system by the Central Student Grants Committee. The insurance applies in Sweden during school hours and during travel to and from the location where school hours are spent.

Students from the EU/EEA or Switzerland

Students from the EU/EAA or Switzerland should register for an European Health Insurance Card from a Social Insurance office in their home countries before travelling to Sweden. The card grants health care on the same terms as Swedish citizens, if the treatment becomes necessary during your stay in Sweden. It does not cover care which can be delayed until you return home, such as some types of dental treatment. Note that dental care is subsidized, but not free.

The European Health Insurance Card does not cover property or losses from burglary, robbery, and other theft. Students are advised get a private insurance (for example a travel insurance from your home country) to cover this.

Exchange students

The University of Borås provides exchange students from partner universities with an insurance called Student IN. The insurance is valid from two weeks before the start of the semester until 2 weeks after the end of the semester. Students from outside the EU/EEA will recieve an insurance certificate shortly after the admission letter has been sent out. The insurance grants you free medical treatment, including dental care for up to 3000 SEK/year, if the treatment becomes necessary during your stay in Sweden. The International Office will help you to fill out the claim form if treatment becomes necessary.

For further information, please read the Terms and Conditions Student IN (PDF).

Fee-paying students

Students liable to pay tuition fees as well as students with scholarship from the University of Borås are insured by the university through the insurance FAS+. In order to obtain a residence permit you need to show that you have a comprehensive health insurance that covers the whole period you are in Sweden. You will receive an insurance certificate from the International Office when the first instalment of your tuition fee has been paid.

The insurance includes medical care, emergency dental care (up to 3000 SEK/year), home transport cover, accident cover, property cover, liability cover as well as legal expenses cover. The insurance cover applies 24 hours a day in Sweden. The International  Office will help you to fill out the claim form if treatment becomes necessary.

Students admitted to 2 or 3 year programmes

Students with admission to a programme that will continue for 12 months or longer can register for a Swedish personal identity number at the Swedish Tax Agency. This gives them the right health care on the same conditions as Swedish citizens. Note that this right only applies once you have obtained a Swedish personal number, which usually takes a couple of weeks. A separate insurance is necessary to cover the period until you have recieved your personal number.

Fee-paying students are covered by the insurance FAS+, (see terms and conditions above)

Swedish social insurance does not cover property or losses from burglary, robbery, and other theft. Students should get a private insurance (for example a travel insurance from your home country) to cover this.

Swedish Institute scholarship holders

Swedish Institute scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period. Contact the Swedish Institute if you have questions or need to be reimbursed for medical costs.

Home and travelling insurance

The University recommends all students to individually purchase a home insurance (in Swedish "hemförsäkring") from a Swedish or international insurance company. Home insurance typically covers, personal property such as computers, mobile phone, tablets, clothes, furniture etc.; Liability, legal assistance.  Most home insurances include travelling insurance but sometimes only if the policy holder (the students) has a Swedish social security number.

Below you can find contact information to Swedish insurance companies that can offer a home insurance to students without a Swedish social security number. It is often necessary to contact the insurance company be phone or visit them for personal assistance.
