This course is designed for teachers and others interested in the English language and English as a global language. It gives a broad perspective on the position of English globally, and focuses on the language from historical, economic and political perspectives.

English language usage is also discussed, with a focus on different social and cultural contexts, as well as variations in language connected to geography, class, gender and ethnicity.

The course is given in English, and includes lectures, seminars and group work. During the course, participants are required to carry out a minor research project on social and historical phenomena in different parts of the English-speaking world.
