Master´s Programme in Information Systems: AI Management, 120 hp
AI Management brings together Information Systems, applied AI and management. You will study how AI-based information systems are developed, implemented and governed, and how technology interacts with people, organisational structures and institutional conditions.
Who is the programme for
The programme is designed for students from different academic disciplines who want to understand how AI can be applied, managed and governed in organisations. You do not need to be an AI specialist or have a technical degree.
Your previous studies and experience provide a starting point for exploring AI-related opportunities and challenges in fields such as business, healthcare, education, public administration and technology.
Entry requirements
- A Bachelor's degree comprising at least 180 ECTS credits, or equivalent.
- An independent academic thesis, degree project or equivalent scholarly work comprising at least 15 ECTS credits.
- At least 7.5 ECTS credits in Information Systems.
- English proficiency equivalent to English 6 or English level 2 in Swedish upper secondary school.
Programme content
Develop both technical and organisational perspectives on AI. The programme progresses from Information Systems research, AI-assisted programming, data management and AI project management to machine learning, AI-driven transformation, agentic AI and governance.
During the second year, you deepen your knowledge through advanced AI methods, research methods, large language models and AI-driven business modelling. The programme culminates in a 30 ECTS master’s thesis.
Throughout the programme, you learn to analyse AI as part of a sociotechnical system, considering technical performance together with organisational, ethical, regulatory and societal consequences.
Practice-based projects
Projects and organisational cases connect theory, research and practice. You may work with challenges inspired by or developed together with organisations in the private and public sectors, analyse needs, develop and evaluate AI-based solutions, and communicate results.
The ambition is also to create opportunities for interaction with partner organisations, researchers and practitioners, helping you build a professional network while developing knowledge that can create organisational and societal value.
How you will learn
The programme is designed as a coherent learning journey rather than a collection of separate courses. Clear weekly goals, active learning and regular follow-up help you understand what is expected, monitor your progress and connect each week’s work to the wider programme.
Learning is practice-based and project-oriented. You work with organisational problems and cases, use current AI tools and methods, collaborate online, and connect your work to research and professional practice. Feedback, reflection and dialogue are integrated throughout the programme.
Full-time online study
Study online in English over two years. The programme is designed for full-time study and requires active participation, independent work and collaboration. Digital learning activities, projects, seminars and varied forms of assessment are integrated throughout the programme.
The weekly rhythm provides structure in the distance format. Preparation, live online learning, project work, feedback and reflection recur across the programme, while the exact rhythm varies between courses.
The University of Borås provides the digital learning environments, software and computing resources required for the programme. Students need their own computer with sufficient capacity and a stable internet connection.
Career opportunities
Develop a profile for qualified roles at the intersection of AI, technology and organisational development. Depending on your previous experience and interests, possible career directions include AI project management, AI governance, digital and AI transformation, business development, analysis and AI-related decision support.
The programme also prepares you for research and development work and for further studies at doctoral level in Information Systems and related fields.
