CDW as a carbon dioxide sink and new material for production

The objective of the project CDW as a carbon sink and new material for production financed by Formas is to absorb CO2 in crushed construction demolition waste (CDW), using natural chemical process known as carbonation. In this way, secondary aggregate will store CO2 permanently as a carbon sink. It may then be utilized as an aggregate in new concrete. The challenge of the project demands investigation of high qualitative procurement of CDW, to compete with natural resources such as natural gravel and crushed rock. The project will optimize the crushing/demolition process and develop potential methods to accelerate the carbonation, with the use of flue gases from local heating plants.

The goal of the project is upscaling of concrete recycle processes for a climate optimized carbonated aggregate and reduced landfill volumes, as well as reduction of the natural resources extraction on a local scale.
