Production of antibacterial fibers from fungal cell wall

Production of antibacterial fibers from fungal cell wall

Fungal chitin and chitosan are alternatives to those prepared from shellfish wastes. Chitosan-chitin fibers (obtained from shellfish resources) have already shown a good potential for medical applications e.g., as sutures and wound healing materials.

A new method will be developed for production of fibers from fungal chitin-chitosan. The goal is to replace the toxic chemicals usually used in spinning of chitin fibers with a safe solvent. This project is a stepping stone towards development of new biomaterials from fungal chitin-chitosan especially for biomedical applications.
