Danish fashion company attracted Emma to Copenhagen
What made you want to do an internship at Samsøe Samsøe?
"I wanted to do my internship in Copenhagen because I love the city and had lived there before. The Danish fashion market is very interesting, so I applied to several companies in Copenhagen. I was already familiar with Samsøe Samsøe and thought it would be exciting to intern at a larger fashion company like theirs. They had an open call for interns in the marketing team, so I submitted my application, was invited for an interview, and, to my delight, was offered the position!"
What were your responsibilities during the internship?
"I worked on everything from newsletters to research and participated in weekly meetings with the entire team. My research assignments were particularly interesting, and I had the opportunity to present my findings to the team, allowing me to contribute to various marketing strategies. I also learned a great deal about CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and worked on the launch of a new customer loyalty programme.
I had a fantastic supervisor, which gave me the confidence to take initiative and suggest projects that I thought would be valuable."
How did your education prepare you for the internship?
"First of all, the Swedish School of Textiles has a strong reputation, which increases your chances of being selected when applying for internships. During my internship, my education was valuable overall because it helped me understand the different teams and departments that make up a fashion company.
Of course, there is a lot you only learn once you enter the work life, but I think the programme provides a solid foundation for understanding the industry and the challenges companies face. You can provide valuable insights in meetings when you have a solid foundation and an interest in areas such as sustainability and marketing. In addition, my previous experience as a sales associate in a clothing store, combined with my education in design, was highly appreciated, and I was seen as a valuable addition to the team."
What advice would you give to other students considering an internship abroad?
"I would encourage anyone interested in doing an internship abroad to start applying early! It really pays off to submit applications well in advance, as many companies recruit interns for the entire year at the same time.
Research the companies based in the city or country where you would like to do your internship, and don't hesitate to send speculative applications even if they don't currently have any internship vacancies posted. At Samsøe Samsøe, English is the working language because the company operates internationally, so it's worth looking for international companies if you don't speak the local language."
