Knitting Technology Lab

The lab has world-leading expertise in circular and flat knitting and is used by all courses at the Swedish School of Textiles to varying degrees. All Bachelor's students take an undergraduate course in knitwear and doctoral students and professors, sometimes from international universities, conduct research in the lab. National and international companies also develop various prototypes in the lab.

In the lab, you can make yardage on circular knitting machines and test different designs on hand-knitting machines using flat knitting techniques. Flat knitting machines produce form-knitted prototypes of jumpers, gloves, and blood vessels, among other things. A computer program is used to design the construction and this is then transferred to the machine, which can then knit three-dimensional shapes in both rigid and elastic yarns.

Many different materials are used in the lab, from regular yarns to materials such as paper, various metals, and some materials that are secret.

Resources:

  • The lab has high-tech circular and flat knitting machines from manufacturers such as Stoll, Shima Seiki and Mayer.
  • The lab has about 40 hand-sewing machines.
