I am a doctoral student in educational sciences. I am employed in the Department of Educational Work, University of Borås, and my studentship is with the Department of Educational Sciences, Lund University. I am part of SPETS (Studies in Professional Education and Training for Society), a national research school collaboratively run by the University of Borås, Lund University, Malmö University, and Chalmers University of Technology. I hold a Master of Science in Educational Research from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, a Bachelor of Arts with Education (English language and literature) from Makerere University, Uganda, and a post-secondary Diploma in Secondary Education (business studies) from Kyambogo University, Uganda.

Besides doctoral research, I teach in teacher education courses; and serve as Research Secretary, coordinating internal and public research seminars in the Department of Educational Work. Previously, I served as Deputy Executive Director at The Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda(nongovernmental organisation); President of The Uganda National English Language Teachers’ Association (professional agency); and a teacher of English language and literature in Ugandan secondary schools.

Research

My research interests and competence fall within the broad fields of education, sociology, culture, critical literacy as well as language and literature.

In my doctoral research titled ‘Community-oriented Praxis in Teacher Education’, I examine teacher education’s contribution to preparing teacher candidates to work and thrive in schools situated in and shaped by different local community conditions. I focus on how teacher education’s pedagogical and administrative practices consider and address the conditions posed by a school’s situatedness in different parts of a city or a rural area, as well as the prevalent sociocultural and socioeconomic landscapes and relational dynamics that shape education access and participation and, therewith, life experiences and opportunities.

Besides teacher education, my other research and publications focus on research education, critical literacy, culture in development, cultural rights and managing diversity, as well as communities in academia. I have conducted such research in academic and development work environments, such as with non-profit organisations.

Teaching

I am educated and competent at teaching courses and supervising projects in research methods and academic writing, English language and literature. Over time, I have taught these at secondary school and higher education levels. I have also facilitated professional development courses for civil society workers in the fields of culture in development, cultural rights and managing diversity.

At the University of Borås, I teach intercultural perspectives, sociolinguistics, English as a global language and digital pedagogical tools. I am also competent in teaching courses and supervising research and portfolio projects employing social research methods.

Awards and scholarships

In 2019, I received a Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals to study a Master of Science in Educational Research at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Again, in 2019, I also received the 2019 TESOL Leadership Mentoring Program Award during the TESOL International Convention and Language Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. This was in recognition for fostering continuous professional development of teachers in Uganda.

I am also a 2017 alumnus of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), a programme of the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, implemented by IREX. I was hosted at Kent State University and co-taught English Language Arts at Rootstown Middle School in Ohio, USA
