Do you know what it takes to express oneself in an academic setting orally or in writing? Do you want to find out how you can avoid plagiarism? Or do you simply want to develop your academic language skills? Then you are welcome to the Language Lab drop-in! We can give you advice on how to improve your language (Swedish, English), so that you might also improve your overall study achievement.

In this lecture/workshop you get an introduction to academic writing. We discuss general features of academic writing and different text types. The lecture also covers the writing process, how to get started on a written assignment and what could influence the finished text.

If you are interested in learning more about how to acknowledge the work of others, you are welcome to attend this lecture/workshop. We discuss when and how to give reference in-text. How to deal with paraphrasing and quotes will also be covered. Lastly, we discuss different definitions of plagiarism and how you avoid it. Our starting point is the Harvard style of referencing.

Most examinations involve written assignments and often they require collaboration with others. Knowing how to handle and work with text is vital to be able to facilitate the learning process and achieve a smoother study experience. This lecture/workshop gives you hands on advice on some useful formatting and editing features in Word that can help you when dealing with templates or large quantities of text. You will be able to try out your skills during the session. We will work on computers equipped with relevant software. However, if you are a student at University of Borås you have access to Office 365 and may download the Office programs to your computer. Are you writing in English as a Second/Foreign Language? This lecture/workshop describes how you can develop your language skills in order to better meet the criteria of the academic style. We discuss useful tools, common ESL-mistakes and how you can assess your language skills. We also touch on how to use, receive and give feedback to revise your texts.

This lecture is an introduction to presentation skills. We discuss what needs to be considered when giving an oral presentation before a group. This session also covers the different parts of a typical presentation and how to organize the contents. What positive and negative factors influence a presentation? How do you best put your message across? Furthermore, different presentation aids and how they can/should be used are discussed.
