Doctoral degree

An entire doctoral programme towards a doctoral degree consists of four years of full-time studies, 240 higher education credits. The education towards the doctoral degree is made up of a scientific doctoral thesis and a part in which you take courses. The doctoral thesis part always constitutes at least half the education, i.e. at least 120 credits. If you are accepted with employment as a doctoral student, hence a doctoral studentship, the position normally refers to an education towards a doctoral degree.

Licentiate degree

It is also possible to earn a licentiate degree that corresponds to two years of full-time studies, 120 higher education credits. The education towards the licentiate degree is made up of a scientific thesis and a part in which you take courses. The thesis always constitutes at least half the education, i.e. at least 60 credits. Regardless of the form of funding, it is possible to earn a licentiate degree on the way to your final doctoral degree.
