Dear student,
We are very excited to be welcoming the first ever cohort to our new masters’ programme in information science with a focus on digital environments. This programme will give you a unique and holistic approach to information and prepare you for a dynamic job market where you can take on expert roles or continue on in academia.
First day and first course
Term starts on Monday August 28th 2023, the first day is dedicated to the student union who will organise an introduction to all new students at the university.
The first course module is Introduction to Information Science, where we will have a live introduction to the course and programme online in Zoom at 13.00 on Tuesday August 29th. You can already find the syllabus with reading for list further down on this page for all courses for the first term.
Don’t forget to register to keep your spot.
Tools and teaching materials
You should have access to a new computer and have a strong enough internet connection which enables for you to use multimedia, video, audio files, and even do some programming. A headset is strongly recommended for participation in zoom sessions. You may have to buy some software and teaching materials for your studies. You will be able to access books, databases and some other resources through the Library of the University of Borås free of charge.
Lectures
There will be both recorded lectures for you to watch and live workshops, seminars and meetings in zoom to participate in. Our virtual learning platform Canvas is used to organise the different course modules, and where you will find recorded lectures, study materials and information about live sessions. We plan to have a few voluntary sessions on campus in Borås later on, which you will receive information about in due course.
You will find information at different areas on Canvas:
The programme area MAIDI23h will show information regarding the whole programme, prerequisites, upcoming registrations to courses in later periods, urgent messages etc.
Course areas will show all details regarding content, examinations etc for specific course modules. So there will be a dedicated Canvas area for each course you take during your studies here.
Full time studies
We do not recommend that you work or at least no more than part time while studying, as doing this degree requires 40 hours of study per week. Remember that your studies will be online full-time for two years, and you will predominantly work from home and at your own pace. This offers flexibility but also means you need to take responsibility for structuring your own days.
If you have studied humanities or social sciences, the challenging part will be our technological courses. If you have a computer science or IT background, there will be subjects dealing with human and societal issues that may make new demands of you.
International
The Swedish School of Library and Information Science has strong contacts with the professional and research community in Sweden, Europe and around the world. The students applying to this program also come from many countries. As participants in the programme, you will meet each other online and perhaps even on campus, exchange experience and knowledge, and build your own international network of professional contacts.
We once again welcome you and look forward to seeing you in a digital environment at the end of August.
